The Clinical Career Fellow Award 2025, a partnership between the CRIS Cancer Foundation and Oxford Cancer, offers a unique opportunity for clinicians to integrate cancer research with medical practice. This award is designed to support early-career clinical academics in building independent research programs that can lead to improved patient outcomes.

We seek research-qualified clinicians (PhD, DPhil, MD) with a clear vision for establishing an independent academic career. Ideal candidates will have a project proposal aligned with Oxford Cancer’s research priorities and a robust plan for collaboration and innovation.

About the Award

  • Award Value: Up to £74,600 per year for up to three years.
  • Funding Covers: Salary, research consumables, clinical activities, and associated services.
  • Purpose: To facilitate collaborative, translational research and career independence.

Applicants are encouraged to focus on one or more of the following cancer research areas:

  • Immuno-Oncology
  • Cancer Big Data
  • Novel Therapeutics
  • Early Cancer Detection

Additional Information:

  • International candidates are welcome to apply but will be responsible for visa and NHS surcharge costs.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Medically qualified and registered (GMC or equivalent).
  • Enrolled on a recognised UK postgraduate medical training programme, at ST3 or above
  • Holds a higher degree (PhD/MD/DPhil) in a relevant field.
  • Holding or able to obtain an honorary NHS contract, if required.
  • Applicants may have completed an Academic Clinical Lectureship, but should not currently be employed as an ACL. 

Application Process

Identify a Research Group: Applicants must secure a host group at Oxford University. The group leader must commit to providing support for the project.

Prepare Your Application: Submit a project proposal and include the following:

  • Letter of support from your host group leader.
  • Endorsements from departmental academic and administrative leadership.
  • Provisional approval from your Training Programme Director (for clinical trainees).

Peer Review & Assessment: Applications will be reviewed based on their scientific importance, potential for impact, resource justification, and alignment with the candidate’s goals.

Interview: Top candidates will be invited for interviews.
