Immunology-oncology & Biochemistry (IOB) is part of the MCDC Group, an Oxford University (OU) and Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) partnership.
IOB provides accredited-standard immune assay support to assess therapeutic efficacy, primarily supporting pre-cancer and cancer vaccine clinical trials. The team offers specialist expertise in immunophenotyping and biomarker detection using established assay platforms and techniques, including flow cytometry, ELISpot, FluoroSpot, Luminex and ELISA.
Our expertise supports both pre-clinical and clinical research, from primary cell processing and immune assays to regulated workflows, laboratory data management and project delivery.

Laboratory Platforms
IOB operates a range of specialist laboratory platforms and facilities supporting immune monitoring, assay development and primary cell processing.
- Flow and spectral cytometry: Aurora and BD Fortessa cytometry platforms supporting conventional and spectral flow cytometry.
- ELISpot and FluoroSpot: Platforms for high-throughput immune-response assays, supported by dedicated plate storage, workspace and sample-tracking equipment.
- Luminex and ELISA: Facilities for cytokine and biomarker analysis and assay development, including automated plate washing, dedicated workbench space and sample-tracking facilities.
- Class II tissue culture: Dedicated tissue-culture facilities equipped with biological safety cabinets, incubators with temperature and CO₂ monitoring, centrifuges, cold storage and standard laboratory equipment.
- Sample and reagent management: Dedicated reception and tracking facilities, with controlled waste streams supporting laboratory workflows.
Scientific Capabilities
- Flow cytometry: Bulk-cell sorting, pHLA tetramer/dextramer staining for TCR identification, and small-panel immunophenotyping across multiple cytometry platforms.
- Spectral flow cytometry: Large-panel immunophenotyping, including intracellular cytokine staining (ICS).
- Cytokine analysis: ELISA, Luminex and MSD platforms for cytokine-release assessment.
- Primary cell isolation and culture: PBMC isolation, cryopreservation and thawing; immune-cell subset isolation; generation of monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) and activated primary B cells; and cell-line culture.
- Cell biology: T-cell and PBMC stimulation using peptide pools, alongside extended culture and expansion of T cells expressing TCRs of interest.
- Peptide handling and immune-response assays: High-throughput IFNγ ELISpot, and multiplex FluoroSpot for the detection of up to four secreted markers.
- Quality and regulatory expertise: Experience working within GLP, GMP and HTA frameworks, including SOP development, reagent validation, instrument IQ/OQ/PQ, assay validation and verification, EQA, reporting and auditing.
- Clinical and sample support: Qualified phlebotomy expertise and donor database coordination, supporting integration between laboratory and clinical activities.
- Laboratory data and tracking: LIMS and ELN superuser expertise covering reagent, sample and experiment tracking, user training and basic SQL scripting.
